Cooling Tower Replacement
Description
IPS provided construction services to replace an existing cooling tower with a new Baltimore Aircoil (BAC) tower. Among several project challenges, both in the initial selection and during installation, was the precise sizing of the cooling tower’s replacement to the existing tower’s footprint, which was to be installed within a relatively short production shutdown. Not only was the footprint small, but the area proved difficult to access, requiring crane picks to accommodate the new installation. Nevertheless, effective preparation and project management by IPS ensured that the cooling tower was delivered and installed successfully within the required timescale.
Using the combined knowledge and experience of IPS’s Project Team, the cooling tower was planned, designed, and installed. Due to the limited space and difficulty of the lift, the existing tower was dismantled in position and removed in sections, including lines and pumps, before the new cooling tower could be lifted into position. The ground was then prepared for the new cooling tower, with the tower lifted across and installed in place.
In addition to the tower’s replacement, the project scope included pump selection, modification of local supply lines and steel members, installation of a new design-build DDC controls system, electrical supply modifications, structural installations including a new wood deck platform, and to finish, full testing and commissioning.
Although challenging, IPS successfully managed all construction, mechanical and electrical works, and installed and commissioned the tower within the agreed project schedule.
