Chiller Replacement

Description

IPS replaced an existing critical cooling plant as it proved to be inefficient and unreliable. With a chilled water system as the single greatest energy user, it was imperative that the new equipment be efficient and reliable. The total chiller capacity remained 80 tons with a constant primary and variable volume secondary chilled water loop.

The electrical room houses transformers, switchgear, and auxiliary electrical systems required for the new central plant. The facility also has space for a control room/office area and a restroom. The second floor is home to chilled water pumps and condenser water pumps. The chilled water plant was designed for automatic operation, monitored from a first-floor control room.

IPS’s project team developed a unique solution involving the installation of new pumps and air-cooled chillers on the roof. The chilled water system had to provide a stable chilled water temperature since it cools items of specialist equipment and a failure in the water system could potentially result in costly damage.

The project team also designed and installed a custom BMS control system to manage the operation of the chillers and all primary system components. This included condenser water pumps and chilled water pumps.
