Arc Flash Study

Description

The client’s Fremont campus required an arc flash and short circuit study to establish safety protocols and prevent building hazards. This project covers the electrical system from Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) services to the main switchboard ‘MSB’ and ‘MSB-2′, to the downstream motor control centers, switchboards, and panelboards per single-line drawings.

IPS calculated the arc flash hazard level for the electrical distribution system to determine the levels of current that flowed through the system under fault conditions. To ensure protective devices operated as an integrated system, IPS’s electrical engineers configured proper device settings. As per NFPA 70E Article 130.5, the level of personal protective equipment (PPE) based on the incident energy level for the electrical equipment was determined. Included in the analysis of the equipment were thermal limits such as transformers and cables. These devices were evaluated for proper protection in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and industry standards. In addition, IPS replaced all panels and circuits that required removal.
